Description

Lublin competed for the European Capital of Culture 2016 due to its role in fostering integration and dialogue between Western and Eastern cultures. The city hosts numerous cultural festivals, galleries, theaters, and artist spaces.

Located on Lublin’s outskirts, Majdanek was a Nazi concentration and extermination camp uniquely situated near a population center. It was intended as a source of forced labor to support the German empire’s eastern expansion. Prisoners came from nearly 30 countries, mainly Poles, Jews, Russians, Belarusians, and Ukrainians.

The camp’s tragic history ended on 23 July 1944, when the Red Army liberated the city. Today, the Majdanek National Museum includes the Monument of Struggle and Martyrdom, a mausoleum containing ashes of victims, and remains of the original camp.
