Description
This tour combines expert storytelling, authentic WWII locations, and a vintage Żuk minibus to provide a deeper understanding of Warsaw’s wartime history. It covers the international context before 1939, the German invasion, and Soviet occupation of eastern Poland, and how these events shaped the city and resistance movements.
A key focus is the Warsaw Ghetto, established by Nazis in 1940, where hundreds of thousands of Jews were imprisoned. You will visit the remaining fragments of the Ghetto Wall and see the unrestored ruins on Waliców Street, bearing witness to the destruction. Learn about the wooden ghetto bridge over Chłodna Street, which connected two sections of the sealed ghetto.
The tour continues in the Muranów district, rebuilt on wartime rubble. You will visit the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes and the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, near the site of the first clashes during the 1943 Ghetto Uprising. This area is now dedicated to remembrance and dialogue.
The tour also examines Soviet crimes against Poles, such as mass deportations to Siberia and the Katyń massacres, commemorated at the Monument to the Fallen and Murdered in the East.
The final part of the tour covers the 1944 Warsaw Uprising – the city’s last resistance effort before Soviet forces entered in 1945. After the uprising’s suppression, Nazis destroyed most of Warsaw.
Archival photographs throughout the tour illustrate comparisons between wartime and current locations. Traveling by retro minibus adds historical atmosphere and allows comfortable coverage of multiple sites.
